All icons can be scaled to the sizes of 16, 24, 32, 48, 128 and 512 pixel.
Here you see a partial representation of a 512x512px icon. I think it will take a while until displays hit such a high density to display this icon in the correct size.
Anyways it’s good to have a high-resolution version of each icon for advertising, manuals and hardware labeling.
